Sierra Club Endorses Attorney General Mark Herring for Re-election

Grassroots Group Praises Work to Protect Virginia’s Environment

RICHMOND, Virginia – Today, the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club endorsed Attorney General Mark Herring for re-election.

The attorney general has continually shown to be a climate champion, being one of only 15 attorneys general to urge support of the Clean Power Plan from then President-Elect Trump and releasing a foundational opinion for cutting carbon in Virginia.

“From the Bay to the Blue Ridge, Virginia’s unparalleled natural resources and beauty are also economic and intrinsic assets that must be protected and preserved,”Attorney General Herring said. “I am proud of the record we’ve built during my term to secure the economic, health, and environmental benefits of clean air, water, and energy and open space. As attorney general, I will always stand up to everyone from polluters to the President to protect and preserve our environment and the health of our people.”

Herring has also repeatedly defended clean water and clean air, doing important work to bring more than $100 million in compensation from the federal settlement with Volkswagen to Virginia to address environmental harm, defending the commonwealth’s moratorium on uranium mining and securing a $50 million environmental damages settlement, the largest in Virginia history. John Adams, candidate for Attorney General, publicly supported the Trump administration’s pick to head the EPA, climate denier Scott Pruitt.

“We are very pleased to announce today that the Sierra Club officially endorsed Attorney General Mark Herring for re-election,” Corrina Beall, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter Legislative and Political Director, said. “We are confident that Herring will continue to work to protect Virginia’s families’ health, air and water and build a clean energy economy that works for the Commonwealth. ”

Along with the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its volunteer strength to Herring’s campaign.
“We will do all we can to help ensure Herring is re-elected,” Kate Addleson, Director of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, said. “Sierra Club volunteers will work to contact voters on his behalf, and we will speak to the public as often as possible about his continued work as a climate and environmental leader. We look forward to a victory for Herring in the fall and to his continued fight for the environment as our Attorney General.”
